About
It takes effort not to be captivated by a ginkgo leaf. Look closely at one, and you’ll notice how the veins begin at the stem and fan outwards in parallel lines along the two lobes of this unusually elegant leaf. The surface is remarkably smooth and even, heavier and somehow more resilient than other leaves. The ginkgo is truly an original among trees: it has no close relatives in the modern world, and fossils of ginkgo leaves date back 270 million years ago. In Japan, the ginkgo is known as the “bearer of hope,” perhaps due to the tenacity that has carried it through millennia of change. With a graceful quiet, the ginkgo reflects both the timeless and fleeting qualities of nature.
