About
The monstera plant is a creeping vine that grows in the rain forests of Mexico and South America. This lovely plant with heart-shaped, glossy green leaves is an epiphyte, which means it mostly grows on other trees. (The rain forest, in all of its passionate abundance, has plants growing on plants growing on plants, each one benefitting from a diverse community.)
The monstera has long aerial roots that allow the plant to draw moisture from the air. These roots are used in Mexico not only to make baskets, but also to make a tincture that is taken to alleviate arthritis.
But the real miracle of nature is how the monstera gets to its lofty home on a tree branch. Once a seedling bursts open its seed pod on the forest floor, it starts growing towards the darkest place it can find. This may seem like a bad idea, but the monstera seedling knows what it is doing: the darkest place in a rain forest is most often the shadow of the tallest tree nearby. Once the monstera seedling reaches the tree trunk, it promptly changes direction and begins to grow towards the light, creeping up the tree to its aerial home.
