The ancient Greeks believed for many hundreds of years that the Earth was at the center of our solar system, and all other celestial bodies, including the sun, revolved around us. According to Plato and Aristotle, the Earth was a stationary object and the heavenly spheres were being carried through their orbits by the Fates, white-robed women controlling the destiny of all living beings.ΞΎ Clotho, "the spinner"; Lachesis, "the allotter"; Atropos, "the inevitable"; they spun the stars and the moon and the planets around us like a giant prayer wheel. Aristotle believed that if the Earth were rotating, the birds flying through the air would be left behind in our earthly dust.
Of course, we now know that our planet is really hurtling through space at an incredible speed; and, tilted ever so slightly on its axis it rotates and revolves and gives us the life-sustaining patterns of day and night, and spring, summer, fall, winter. Thanks to Galileo and his telescopes in the 17th century, we know that the earth does move, and still the birds will always be able to return home at the end of each day in the air.
Artist
Artist Heather Perry lives in a small town in northern Maine, where the woods and rugged coastline inspire her beautiful handcrafted designs. Heather approaches each piece of jewelry from her background in fine art sculpture, rendering incredible detail and depth in recycled sterling silver and gold. In her life outside of her jewelry craft, Heather often visits the ‘big city’ of Portland, Maine, with her son. They both enjoy music stores, Japanese restaurants, and other treats small-town life doesn’t offer.
