In antiquity, garnets were thought to protect the traveler and herald a
safe and successful journey. The name "garnet" originates in the Latin granatus,
meaning grain, from which the pomegranate - with its red, jewel-like
seeds - also takes its name. Garnets come in a variety of colors, but
red garnet has always been favored, found in ancient Anglo-Saxon relics
inlaid with gold. Red garnet is January's birthstone.
