About
…Light-winged Dryad of the trees,
In some melodious plot
Of beechen green, and shadows numberless,
Singest of summer in full-throated ease.
-Keats, from ‘Ode to a Nightingale’
The poet Keats was familiar with the ancient Greek personification of the forest. Dryads, like the nightingale in his poem, presided over the trees. They were rhapsodized in mythology as beautiful, mysterious female sprites, born with each new tree, living and growing with the forest around them. If a dryad’s tree came to harm, she suffered with it; when her tree was healthy and strong, she thrived. The dryads inspired passion in the gods and mortals alike: Eurydice was a wood nymph whose husband, Orpheus, loved her so much he followed her to the Underworld to find her and bring her back.
The Dryad Collection is a soulful, beautiful recollection of once upon a time, when trees had spirits and the gods came down to earth.
