Whether by chance, intention, or accident, Earth is just the right distance from the sun to allow a thriving myriad of living things. In the beginning, there was light - and then came the trees. The existence of trees, the green of the world, has made humanity possible; hopefully this truth reminds us that we’re only a small part of an intricate web. Most cultures around the world, at some point in their histories, recognized this truth by spinning tales of mythical trees: life-giving, soul-keeping trees.

The story of the Bodhi Tree is one such tale. The Gautama Buddha once sat for seven days under a fig tree, meditating. On the seventh day, Buddha became aware of the truth of the universe. He had reached Enlightenment, or ‘bodhi.’ This is how a certain kind of fig tree, growing only because it knew to reach for the sun, became an icon to Buddhists and Hindus. The Bodhi Tree symbolizes life, awareness, and peace, and is still honored by many people around the world. In fact, some of these sacred figs still grow, thought to be living remnants planted from cuttings of the very tree under which Buddha sat. They are perhaps the oldest documented trees in the history of human consciousness, still reaching for the sun after thousands of years.

Artist

Artist Heather Perry lives in a small town in northern Maine, where the woods and rugged coastline inspire her beautiful handcrafted designs. Heather approaches each piece of jewelry from her background in fine art sculpture, rendering incredible detail and depth in recycled sterling silver and gold. In her life outside of her jewelry craft, Heather often visits the ‘big city’ of Portland, Maine, with her son. They both enjoy music stores, Japanese restaurants, and other treats small-town life doesn’t offer.
